No one can visit my household with a cold, cough, or sore throat without getting dosed with my famous garlic juice. Sounds terrible? Please have more faith in me! Garlic, nature’s most powerful antibiotic, is so effective against oncoming colds, sore throats, and coughs that I just had to find a way to make it palatable for even young children and finicky teenagers, let alone recalcitrant adults. My juice rivals any garlic pill however it was dried, fermented or processed. There is nothing like the juice of fresh garlic to permeate your sinuses, lungs, and every pore of your body while it battles mightily against whatever ails you. If you want an infallible fighter at your side whenever your immune system is challenged, read on to learn how to make my renowned garlic juice. I guarantee you’ll be glad you did!
Garlic is one of humankind’s oldest medicines. It use can be found in Sanskrit records from over 5000 years ago, Chinese texts from 3,000 years ago and the Egyptian Codex Ebers from 1550 BC where it is recommended for bites, worms, tumors and headaches! Garlic has been used throughout the ages to ward off diseases like the plague and to dress wounds especially during World War I before the discovery of penicillin.
Louis Pasteur first proved the antibiotic properties of garlic juice in 1858. Studies have demonstrated that garlic is effective against numerous microbes including strains of staph, strep, and e-coli. While bacteria can develop resistance to some antibiotics, garlic continues to be effective against them. Its effectiveness has also been proven against the bacteria that can cause ulcers and some types of stomach cancer, Helicobacter pylori. Garlic inhibits the growth of yeasts including candida and test tube studies show it to be more potent than nystatin, a common drug used against fungal infections. Fresh garlic also has demonstrated anti-viral efficacy against both the influenza virus and herpes simplex types 1 and 2. Take that bird flu!
Garlic’s action comes from a number of compounds, not just allicin as was previously thought. Allicin is highly reactive and does not survive stomach acid, cooking, or drying. However, garlic in nutritional supplements despite their lack of allicin has been shown to be effective in lowering cholesterol, high triglycerides, high blood pressure and reducing the risk of stroke and the build up of plague in the arteries. If all that weren’t enough, garlic also boosts the immune system and protects against stomach cancer.
Convinced you should give my juice a try? First, you need a juicer. A Vitamix or a blender won’t do. Personally, I have a Champion juicer but any brand juicer that extracts the juice and ejects the pulp will work.
At the onset of your first symptoms, you need to get busy and make yourself the juice. Drink 6 oz of juice 3-4 times a day. The frequent dose will aid your immune system in fighting off the attacking microbe or virus.
You need:
- 10-15 apples
- 1 bulb garlic – organic if available
- 1 piece of fresh ginger - 2”-3” long
- 1 or 2 whole limes
Cut the apples into wedges that will fit through your juicer’s mouth. Separate the garlic cloves. Cut the limes in half or quarters depending on how large they are.
Start juicing with the apples. In between apple wedges, feed through the lime quarters, garlic cloves, and ginger. You’ll find that the apples keep everything moving through the grinder. Your goal is to produce approximately one quart of juice that includes one whole bulb of garlic.
The juice is best made fresh daily, but I’ve been known to make it at night and drink it through the next day. Make sure it is well covered in the refrigerator to prevent as much oxidation as you can.
I confess, you will reek of garlic. The best way to overcome this is to give some juice to everyone in the household. That way everyone is protected from the invading germs and no one minds the smell!
Bad coughs like bronchitis will succumb to this juice but it may not be instantly. You will feel better the moment you start drinking it though. If you are sick with a head cold, the juice will keep it from going down into your chest. If you don’t catch the cold with the juice in time to prevent it altogether, the juice will make the colds’ potency much weaker.
Surprisingly, the juice tastes much better than you expect. It should have a bite, but be pleasantly palatable. Let me know how you like it!
