Organic India was founded in the early 1990’s by a group of Westerners who followed the spiritual teachings of Sri H.W.L. Poonja, also called Papaji, in Lucknow, India. Their idea was simple: To establish a business model that would support the livelihood of thousands of impoverished farmers in India. Organic India would provide training, education and financial aid to farmers that would enable them to be self-sufficient and to develop skills that could be passed on to their children and future generations.
Organic India began with the cultivation of Tulsi, also called “Holy Basil”, which is a plant that has been revered for its health benefits for over 5,000 years by Hindus and Ayurvedic healthcare practitioners. Certified organic Tulsi Teas are packaged in India and sold in the US and Europe under the Organic India brand name.
Now, Organic India works with thousands of family farmers in India, cultivating tens of thousands of acres of farmland that has received third-party organic certification through funding from Organic India. The farmers are commissioned to grow organic crops under their guidance, which Organic India then purchases from them at a premium market price. Organic India also works with local tribes people in India who ethically wild-craft herbs on 592,000 acres of forest that Organic India has certified USDA organic.

Tulsi - Holy Basil
|
I had been invited by Organic India, the company that grows the organic chicory used in Teeccino, to a harvest festival of over 5,000 smallholder Indian farmers to see the benefits that growing chicory and Tulsi was having for these farmer’s livelihoods and health.
As you can tell, I fell in love with Tulsi and agreed to create a line of Tulsi Teas using the three varieties of Tulsi leaves in each blend. They wanted 12 teas, but I couldn’t stop myself. Tulsi lent itself to so many wonderful flavor variations I produced 18 teas. Unable to choose between them, Organic India accepted them all! I hope you enjoy these teas and find them beneficial to your health as much as I have.
