Detox Diets and Caffeine

Detox and Cleanse Diets

The purpose of a detox diet is to allow major organs of elimination, your liver, colon, kidneys and skin, to effectively remove any toxins and waste matter that have accumulated in your fat tissues. The goal is to give your organs a holiday from the bombardment of toxins that come from the foods and drinks we consume, so that the body can deal more effectively with our daily exposure to toxins from the environment.

One type of detox diet allows you to eat whole organic foods and fresh juices in limited quantities. Another type calls for a juice fast for a period of days consuming only fresh green and vegetable juices to completely rest your digestive system and cleanse your liver.

Eliminating Caffeine To Aid The Liver Cleanse

Whichever detox diet you choose, there is one important factor that many articles on detox diets fail to mention: the importance of eliminating caffeine during your detox program for an optimal liver cleanse.

Caffeine is a drug that has to be detoxified in the liver where it is broken down into water-soluble metabolites excreted in the urine. The liver contains an enzymatic pathway called Cytochrome P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) that detoxifies many compounds including caffeine.

CYP1A2 is responsible for detoxifying “xenobiotics”, which are drugs, chemicals, and environmental toxins foreign to the human body. Drugs detoxified in this pathway include both pharmaceuticals drugs like birth control pills or antidepressants, and naturally-occurring ones like caffeine.

The goal of the liver cleanse in a detox diet is to lighten the load on the detoxification pathway to help the liver efficiently clear and release stored toxins.

Caffeine-free Herbal Coffee Supports Liver And Colon Cleansing

Drinking a caffeine-free coffee alternative that contains freshly brewed chicory like Teeccino Herbal Coffee increases the health benefits of your detox diet. Chicory is a bitter herb that stimulates the liver and gallbladder for an effective liver cleanse. Chicory also contains inulin, a soluble fiber and prebiotic which supports a healthy population of beneficial microflora in the intestines and the colon.

Inulin has been shown to increase the immune functions of the colon and to have a positive effect on elimination, helping to keep you regular. Since colon cleansing is an essential part of a detox program, increasing your intake of inulin by drinking chicory will help improve your colon health.

A cup of brewed Teeccino contains 650mg of inulin. Most people only consume around 2000mg of inulin a day from foods like wheat and garlic that contain small amounts of inulin. You can double your intake of inulin and receive its health benefits by drinking a couple of cups of Teeccino daily.

Boosting Alkalinity During Detox Diets

Detox diets are designed to increase your consumption of alkaline fresh fruits and vegetables to decrease acidity, which promotes inflammation, the underlying cause of many chronic diseases. During your detox program, you should increase your intake of alkaline minerals like potassium, calcium and magnesium that the body uses to correct metabolic acidity.

Teeccino Herbal Coffee contains herbs, grains, fruits, and nuts, making it naturally high in the alkaline electrolyte mineral, potassium. The potassium is immediately bioavailable in brewed Teeccino, because unlike eating a banana, there is no fiber to be digested before the potassium can be absorbed.

Drinking non-acidic Teeccino during your detox diet can increase the diet’s alkaline effects. On the other hand, decaf and regular coffee are both acidic, and thus should be avoided during your detox program. Caffeine also increases the loss of minerals in urine, which is another good reason to be caffeine-free during your detox program.

Wean Off Caffeine Before Your Start Your Detox Diet

To get the optimal benefit from your detox diet, start by reducing caffeine, preferably 2 weeks in advance of beginning the diet. If you are a coffee or decaf coffee drinker, even decaf should be avoided during your detox diet because it is made from highly acidic coffee beans and still contains some caffeine.

Blend Teeccino with your coffee and gradually reduce your caffeine intake so that you are drinking 100% Teeccino when you begin your detox program.

People on detox diets may initially experience uncomfortable symptoms like headaches, fatigue, and irritability. If you wean yourself off of coffee before you start your detox diet, you’ll experience less uncomfortable symptoms and have a more enjoyable experience on your diet.

An effective detox diet produces improved digestion with better elimination, a clearer mind with more ability to concentrate, softer skin with fewer blemishes, and greater amounts of natural energy without the need for stimulants. As the body removes waste and toxins, people experience what is often described as a ‘detox high’ with mood improvement and more abundant natural energy. For optimal health benefits, do a detox diet at least once a year or following times of overeating and stress like after the holidays.
