Getting Energy From MCT Oil

Getting Energy From MCT Oil

Ever heard of “bulletproof coffee”? It was invented by a so-called “biohacker”, a person who uses lifestyle changes, diet, supplements and technology to enhance their body’s performance.

Dave Asprey, a self-proclaimed biohacker, drank yak-butter tea in Tibet in the early 2000’s and loved the sustained energy he felt from it. Back in the US, he adapted the idea to coffee, adding butter and MCT oil, a derivative of coconut oil, to his favorite brew. After posting about it on social, the idea went viral. Dave subsequently launched his successful brand of Bulletproof Coffee® and MCT oil hit the charts.

Fast forward to now, and what has gone from a craze to an accepted practice has become people loving MCT oil in their coffee – so why not in their herbal coffee?

MCT oil in Teeccino Instant Lattes

When I started formulating Teeccino’s new instant lattes, I included MCT oil for both its texture and its health benefits.

From a texture standpoint, it adds a lush, creamy mouthfeel to our lattes without needing dairy or thickeners. Blended with organic oat and coconut milk powders, the result is delightful indulgence without being heavy or oily.

Beyond taste, I was excited to find that MCT oil contributes two major wellness benefits to the experience of drinking a hot cup of Teeccino.

Quick, sustained energy for body and brain

Foremost, MCT oil contributes energy to both the body and the brain.

MCT stands for medium-chain triglycerides—a type of fat that’s metabolized differently from the long-chain triglycerides found in foods like olive oil, nuts, butter or cheese. Unlike long-chain fats, MCTs are quickly absorbed by the body and converted into energy, rather than being stored as fat for future use.

Think of MCT oil as fast-burning fuel. That’s one of the reasons it has become popular among athletes, keto followers, and anyone looking for more stable, jitter-free energy throughout the day. As Teeccino drinkers, we prefer relying on nutrients for a stable energy boost rather than stimulants like caffeine.

MCT oil is a perfect complement to Teeccino’s potassium and the D-pinitol from carob that help produce the steady energy we experience when drinking a cup of Teeccino.

The liver uses MCT oil for fuel immediately because it doesn’t require bile to process it. MCTs can also be turned into ketones which are able to cross the blood-brain barrier where they provide an alternative source of fuel for the brain, the most fuel-hungry organ in our body.

Usually the brain is fueled by glucose, but studies are now showing the positive results of fueling our brains with coconut oil and its derivatives like MCT oil, especially in people who suffer from cognitive disorders.

MCT oil and the appetite

There are many reports that MCT oil helps reduce the appetite. With approximately 10% fewer calories than long-chain fats like those in avocadoes and nuts, using MCT oil to satisfy hunger can be a successful part of a weight-loss program.

Although the results of studies for MCT oil and weight loss are inconclusive, MCT oil does seem to reduce the appetite if taken before meals. Personally, I found that I was skipping lunch after drinking my test latte formulas with MCT oil in them. Before I knew it, I had dropped a pound on the scales without intending to!

Getting the best MCT Oil

There are 3 main components in MCT oil but two of them produce the best results. C8, C10 and C12 are all carbon chains of various lengths and contribute different properties to MCT oil’s health benefits.

    • C12, also known as lauric acid, makes up approximately 48% of the fat in coconut oil. It’s known for its antibacterial properties which is one of the reasons why people in the tropics use coconut oil on their skin. However, it is close to being a long chain triglyceride and thus is slower to digest and absorb. For that reason, high potency MCT oil usually excludes this component.

    • C8 is caprylic acid and since it is the shortest chain of all three, the body uses it the quickest for making fuel. It is easily turned into ketones which create more energy while using less of the oxygen you breathe – athletes love that! For energy production, you want to be sure the MCT oil you’re consuming has C8 in it. It is also antibacterial and has soothing effects on gut inflammation.

    • C10, called capric acid, has been shown to attack and destroy Candida, a yeast that feeds on sugar in our gut. It also has a slightly longer chain which produces energy over a longer period of time. Make sure your MCT oil has plenty of C10 to support sustained energy and good gut health.

We’ve made sure that the MCT oil we’ve included in our Teeccino lattes has both C8 and C10 in it.

    Enhancing the Teeccino experience
